a clear winner for Longtree's 119 windows |
"At 7,300 feet," said Longtree's John Romero, "we get temperatures from zero
in the winter to 95 degrees in the Summer. We need windows and doors that
can handle the extremes and that help us lower our heating and cooling bills.
Pella is a clear winner."
The 119 Pella windows at Longtree (57 alone on the main floor) will feature
double or triple-pane glazing, Low-E coatings and formidable weatherstripping
that will help make the home energy efficient year-round.
The company builds its doors and its window frames of solid wood, which delivers
up to 1,100 times the insulating value of aluminum. Then they cover the exteriors
with Pella's long-wearing, low-maintenance aluminum. The choices of colors
and cladding are boundless (Longtree's will either be a dark brown or forest
green). Pella also builds extra-strong premium steel entry doors, which will
be placed in various locations at Longtree.
Does the window crank ever get in your way when you're raising or lowering
a curtain or changing a screen? Have you ever wondered why someone doesn't
built the crank into the window frame where it's out of the way? Pella's
done it. Their cranks can be folded back into the frame so you never have
trouble with interior window treatments or obstructed views.
|
|
We need windows and doors that can handle the extremes.
And speaking of views, Pella makes special screens that actually enhance
the view, increase natural light and ventilation, and are hard to detect
from the home's exterior. Mark those down for Longtree, too.
What about blinds? Next thing you know they'll build them into the window,
and yep, Pella's done that, too. And their snap-in, between-the-glass blinds,
fabric shades and removable grilles are exclusive to the company
Now, this last item is beyond coincidence. Pella's new Rocky Mountain Hardware
is cast in solid bronze, with finishes to match any style--and you can choose
from seven different patinas. The Rocky Mountains? Hey, the view from Longtree
brings them up close and personal. Put us down for the hardware, too.

Superquiet
Lennox furnaces and air conditioners
rated tops in energy efficiency, save $2,000 a year |

The Lennox G61V variable speed
gas furnace delivers an energy
efficiency rating up to 94.6%
By John Romero
We considered several brands of furnaces and air conditioners for Longtree,
but we stopped looking when we came to Lennox. The Dave Lennox Signature
Collection wowed us.
The G61V variable speed gas furnace not only delivered an energy efficiency
rating up to 94.6%, but it's as silent as a snowfall. Lennox bills it as
"The quietest furnace you can buy," and you can put me down as a believer.
Four Seasons Heating of Wheat Ridge, CO, the installers, gave us some tips:
the G61V is a variable speed machine that runs at low speed 80% of the time
to minimize the up-and-down temperature changes you get with standard
furnaces--and its cabinet is lined with special sound-absorbing insulation.
|
|
And, of course, it's Energy Star ® qualified.
It's pretty much the same story with the Lennox HSX15 air conditioner. Lennox
calls it "The quietest central air conditioner you can buy." (Where have
we heard that before?).
It hums along up to 20 times quieter than a standard air conditioner; it
uses Chlorine-free R410A refrigerant which gives you exceptional comfort
without harming the environment, and it's Energy Star ® qualified.
The equipment is the best in the business. When Dave Lennox signs his name,
it has to be. But here's the bottom line: Four Seasons is installing three
furnaces and three air conditioners at Longtree, and some quick math based
on the energy efficiency ratings of both types could net us savings close
to (gulp) $2,000 a year. They're talking my language.

| Longtree's
5-stop Waupaca elevator rises four stories |
"Waupaca was the only elevator we ever considered for Longtree," says Robin
Romero. One look at the accompanying picture and you know the reason why.
Stepping into a walnut and birdseye maple Waupaca Custom elevator is like
stepping into a luxury apartment. The acceleration is gentle, the ride satiny
and the surroundings hushed. And when you reach your destination, an accurate
leveling device assures you a safe exit.
The company's versatile cars can be configured for passengers, a motorized
wheelchair or scooter, or a passenger in a wheelchair--and they can soar
as high as 50 feet with up to six stops. The Longtree version has five stops
and uses all of the height available to climb from the basement to a spacious
4th-story viewroom that overlooks the Rocky Mountains.
Custom elevators are so popular that Waupaca has formed an entire team to
deal with the demand. Local dealers work with the Custom Department to meet
the homeowner's practical and artistic requirements. Literally, you can design
your custom elevator any way you want it.
Four other models give clients a wide range of choices. The Designer is for
those who wish to create or decorate their own car interior; The Heritage
features textured neutral wall panels and handcrafted hickory hardwood trim;
The Estate is made of hand finished oak, includes recessed ceiling lights
and can be ordered in cherry wood or walnut.
A final model, the elegant Estate Ltd., is made of hand finished cherry wood,
with brass trimmed lights and an arched valance. Like other models, it uses
Waupaca's roped hydraulic or winding drum systems that have proven reliable
and safe.

The
Miele Steam oven prepares meals in 20 minutes,
cooks everything from fish and meat to casseroles |
By Robin Romero
"I'm very conscious of the meals I cook for my family. We're more aware than
ever of what we eat, and how it affects us. So I've cooked with steam for
years to try to give us an added nutritional benefit. But when I discovered
the Miele Convection Steam oven I realized I had been stumbling along in
the culinary Dark Ages.
"In the past I pretty well restricted my steaming to corn, carrots, broccoli,
zucchini and the like. But with the Miele oven I'll be able to add everything
from fish, poultry and meats to casseroles, pasta and rice--even desserts.
It's like being let out of jail.
"Personally, I'm not looking for extra work. Give me convenience every time.
So preparing three separate dishes simultaneously on three separate shelves
in 20 minutes will become standard for the Romeros. The Miele oven not only
makes that possible, but there's no transfer of flavor from one dish to another.
"The secret is injection steaming. Remember how we always steamed by boiling
some water in a saucepan then tossing the vegetables on that fanlike thing?
Forget it. In the Miele oven, steam is generated in a separate section, then
injected. The sudden, intense heat seals in the vitamins and flavor.
"And it's really simple to operate. First you fill the water reservoir (it
holds enough for 40 minutes of steam cooking) then pick a preset program
or customize the time and temperature. Then press Start. The automatic timer
doesn't kick in until your preset cooking temperature has been reached. And
the steam shuts off when the door is opened, which means you can slip in
a new dish anytime in the cooking process, press Start again and cooking
resumes. Easy as that.
|
|
The new Miele Convection Steam oven shows off its handsome stainless steel
exterior and capacity to cook three dishes simultaneously. A Miele plate
warmer completes the combination.
"And another thing. The taste of food steamed the Miele way is so good that
you can throw away your salt shaker. You won't need it. For the first time
you'll savor the rich, original flavor of the food you cook. Even reheated
food tastes like you just prepared it.
"I almost forgot to say how handsome the Miele oven is. In my Longtree kitchen
it will be stainless steel. And installation is painless. The oven fits neatly
into a wall cabinet and requires no plumbing. Can't wait!
"Are you looking for an oven that will REALLY change your life? This one
will do it. "

| Wade
Millwork & Materials, LLC. |
When Randy Wade drove past a partially-completed Longtree, he promptly spun
the wheel and drove back to investigate. He wound up with virtually the entire
interior trim job.
His company is a turnkey provider of doors, millwork, and other interior
trim; it incorporates design, purchasing, manufacturing, delivery and
installation plus complete accountability to ensure homeowner satisfaction.
|
|
The massive 8x8 main door at Longtree was Randy's design, right down to the
metal "clavos" that give it a Medieval look. The same Moorish design is carried
throughout the library (every bookcase looks like a scaled-down main door).
The baseboards and railings both pick up the five sections of the pentagon--the
design on which the home is based.
His company has supplied some of the finest custom home builders in Colorado,
and a look at Longtree's interior will tell you why. "He does terrific work,"
said Robin Romero. "We're very pleased."
